What's the difference between a joint car loan and using a cosigner?

A joint loan and a cosigner arrangement look similar on the surface but work differently legally and financially. On a joint loan, both people are equal owners and borrowers—you both sign the note, you're both responsible for the debt, and you both have rights to the vehicle. A cosigner is different: you're the primary borrower and owner, but the cosigner signs to guarantee the loan if you default, without owning the car or having legal claim to it. Lenders treat them similarly in terms of credit impact (both parties' credit scores are checked and affected), but the legal relationship is distinct. Joint loans work best when both people will use the car regularly or when both have income the lender needs to approve the loan. Cosigner arrangements are more common when one person has weak credit or income and needs someone with stronger credit to back them—the cosigner's creditworthiness helps offset the primary borrower's risk. The downside to either approach: if the primary borrower stops paying, the cosigner or joint borrower is on the hook, and it can damage both credit scores. If you're considering either option, the real question is whether the second person's credit and income are actually needed to get approved, or whether you could qualify alone. Many lenders today have options for buyers with lower credit scores or thinner files. Common questions

Will a cosigner's credit score improve if I make all the payments on time?

No—the cosigner's credit score won't improve because they're not building payment history as a borrower, only guaranteeing your obligation. However, their score won't be damaged if you pay on time, which is the main benefit.

Can I remove a cosigner from a car loan after I've built better credit?

Typically no, not without refinancing the loan into your name alone; most lenders won't allow mid-loan cosigner removal, so you'd need to apply for a new loan and pay off the original one.

What happens to a joint loan if one person wants to sell the car?

Both joint borrowers usually have to agree to sell since you both own it legally; if you disagree, one person can't unilaterally sell without the other's signature, which can create serious disputes.
