Gap insurance (Guaranteed Asset Protection) covers the difference between what you owe on a car loan and what the vehicle is worth if it's totaled or stolen. If you finance a car and it gets declared a total loss, your regular auto insurance pays out the car's current market value, but you still owe the lender the full loan balance—that gap is what gap insurance covers. In Florida, gap insurance isn't required by law, but many lenders require or strongly recommend it, especially for buyers with lower down payments or those financing newer vehicles that depreciate quickly. You're most at risk of owing more than the car is worth in the first few years of ownership, when depreciation is steepest. Buyers putting down less than 20 percent, financing longer terms (72+ months), or buying vehicles with high depreciation rates typically benefit most from gap coverage. The cost is usually $15–$25 per month added to your loan payment, or a one-time fee of $200–$600 paid upfront. Some dealers bundle it into the loan; others sell it separately. It's worth comparing whether your regular insurance or credit card offers gap coverage before paying extra. Does gap insurance cover my deductible?
No—gap insurance only covers the loan-to-value gap, not your collision deductible. You'd still owe your deductible to your regular auto insurer.
Can I buy gap insurance after I've already financed a car?
Some insurers and lenders allow after-purchase gap coverage, but it's cheaper and easier to add it during financing. Check with your current lender or insurance company.
Is gap insurance worth it for a used car?
It depends on the car's age and your down payment; used cars depreciate more slowly, so gap coverage is less critical than on new cars, but still useful if you're putting down less than 20 percent.
